Near Alès, Saint-Christol-lès-Alès was founded in the 12th century, between the Languedoc plain and the Cévennes mountains, by the Hospitallers of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. Crossed by the Gardon and Alzon rivers, it is a wine-growing area (côteaux wines), with a cooperative winery. It has a population of 7,000. Home to the famous Coudène brand, renowned for its brandade de morue (codfish brandade) in a thousand variations. Attractions include the Pyramide, built in 1777, the Musée du Scribe, which has brought together all writing media for the past 3,000 years, and the architectural ensemble of church and château (11th century). Gîtes, hotels and bed & breakfasts nearby.
