Arriving in Portes means crossing the true gateway to the Cevennes, with the Lozère mountain stretching out before you. Mostly known for its castle, the village is deeply marked by its mining past and the struggles of the villagers. Indeed, until 1933, the village was located at the foot of the castle, but the coal galleries which multiplied in its basement threatened the houses. The villagers resisted the threats of eviction, and union meetings were held in the village, where even the parish priest urged solidarity. The mining company finally had the village rebuilt a little further away, on its present location.
