Legend has it that Tournan-en-Brie owes its existence to the ancestors of Saint Fare, abbess of the diocese of Meaux, who later founded a monastery here. The town has prospered over the centuries, hosting fairs and markets, a period to which its heritage bears witness, including the 18th-century Remparts washhouse and the 12th-century Château d'Armainvilliers. Restored during the Second Empire, the château was bought by Moroccan King Hassan II in the 1980s. The town also owes its appeal to the Etang d'Armainvilliers, a popular walking area, and to "Ferme électrique", an annual music festival held in late June or early July.
