The origins of Melz-sur-Seine go back a long way. Dating back to Gallic times, its territory has yielded a willow fishing net, evidence of the activities practiced on the banks of a meander of the old Seine. Mentioned in the 12th century, the area has long been devoted to winegrowing, and has been since Antiquity. Like the rest of the département, Melz-sur-Seine produced large quantities of wine until the 19th century, when it was transported by river to Paris. Today, this winegrowing heritage, though tenuous, persists with several estates such as Magalyval in Melz-sur-Seine, where pinot noir, chardonnay, viognier and gamay are cultivated..
