The town traces its origins back to the year 1000, when a charter confirmed ownership of the Bray estate to Bouchard I de Montmorency. A palace was built there in the 12th century by Henry I, Duke of Burgundy. For a time, Bray belonged to Henry V of England. Joan of Arc passed through Bray with Charles VII on September 16, 1429. On September 4, 1914, General Franchet d'Esperey and General Wilson drew up the battle plan for the Marne at the Bray-sur-Seine town hall, where the PMU now stands. Today, the village has preserved its picturesque streets, timber-framed houses, the Sainte-Croix church - collegiate church of Notre-Dame - and the covered market dating from 1842.
