Fortified by William the Conqueror, who channelled the waters of the Iton to feed the ditches of his stronghold, Breteuil preserves some remains of its castle with its mounds and underground passages. At the bottom of the public garden, the current pond is one of its remains, part of a ditch that protected the castle. Today, this fish-filled lake with its peninsulas where swans and mallards live is an invitation to romanticism. The 12th century square tower, a remnant of the former enclosure, and the 16th century organ of the Saint-Sulpice church are among other things two historical relics not to be missed! Breteuil-sur-Iton is also an active village thanks to its many associations.
