Founded by Henry I Beauclerc, Duke of Normandy and King of England, in 1120, Verneuil-sur-Avre (today Verneuil d'Avre et d'Iton following the regrouping with the neighboring municipality of Francheville), built between the Avre and the Iton, was a border town between France and Normandy, then materialized by the Avre. The city was defended by a triple enclosure, with ditches filled by a detour of the Iton. Numerous buildings, dungeons, fortifications, ditches, Tour Grise (former stronghold of the Hundred Years War) and religious buildings testify to its past. The city also has houses with turrets from the 16th century, checkerboard facades and old private mansions. Since then, the proximity of Paris has made Verneuil-sur-Avre a vacation spot. Weekends see an influx of tourists from Paris to relax and enjoy the charms of this small town in the countryside. It is not for nothing that it is part of the "100 most beautiful detours of France": the architectural wealth, the calmness, the presence of water and the numerous green spaces encourage pleasant strolls. Verneuil is animated throughout the year by various events (concerts, exhibitions, guided tours...) such as the International Rendezvous of Naïve Artists, the Festival des Lutins dedicated to young people, the Franco-Quebec Festival, the Geneviève Moll Book Fair, the Festival des Etoiles Symphoniques or the Festival Automne Musical. A program of guided tours of its monuments is offered during each school vacation period.
