The municipality of Sampans is located north-west of Dole, at the foot of Mount Roland Hill, which offers a remarkable panorama of the Jura and the Alps. At the summit of Mont-Roland, a Marian shrine is erected, the church Notre-Dame-du-Mont. Legend tells us that this sanctuary would have been raised by Saint Martin and that the best Chevalier de Roncesvalles stopped there while he sailed for Rome. Since the medieval period, he has suffered several destruction and his current bell, visible from a distance, dates back to 1896.
