A stronghold since medieval times, Auxonne has a prestigious military past: Louis XI built a castle here, Vauban reworked the bastions and installed an artillery arsenal in 1689, and a century later, Napoleon Bonaparte, then a young lieutenant, was a student at the artillery school. In 2022, the town was awarded the "Ville Impériale" label, a reminder of its rich Napoleonic heritage. As the capital of the Val de Saône, the town benefits from a privileged geographical location that allows numerous activities on the water, notably thanks to its large marina.
