Fontenu is a "two-storey" municipality. At the bottom, the eastern end of the lake, at the top of the village at 610 m above sea level. Between the two, a cliff and steep cavities while the west of the lake is shaped by the gentle slopes of the "mollards", small buttes of glacial moraines. In Fontenu, viewpoints offer a beautiful view of the lake of Chalain that it is nice to contemplate from the top. From the 1920 s, the lake provided the village with running water, pumping, and electricity with a hydroelectric power plant installed at the outlet of the water plan.
