It was in the Magdalenian period that man first left his mark on Sourzac. The 200 or so engravings in the Gabillou cave bear witness to this. Excavated in Maastrichtian sandy limestone and 27 metres long, it is difficult to access, with passages barely fifty to sixty centimetres wide. The walls and vault in some places are engraved with animal representations: horses, cattle, bison, reindeer, ibex, mammoths and hares, as well as 2 human representations: the sorcerer of Gabillou and a hooded woman. A number of stone cups used as lamps in Paleolithic times have also been found.
