The H-shaped English bastide town of Beaumont, founded in 1272 by King Edward I of England, is one of the new bastidvilles of the Middle Ages, born of the desire of the kings of England and France to increase their influence in a sensitive area where the Dordogne and Dropt acted as borders between the two kingdoms. In creating these new towns, the founders undertook to give the inhabitants a charter of customs granting them franchises and privileges, and to develop a new art of living here. You can visit on your own or with a guide from the Tourist Office. Take a trip back in time!
