On the left bank of the Aire, the small commune of Marcq has been at the heart of many conflicts. It was occupied in turn by Prussian troops in 1815 and 1870, then by the Germans during the last two wars before being liberated by the Allies. Although its church was destroyed during the Great War, its castle, built by the master forger Nicolas Dérué in 1760, is still standing and is well worth a little detour.
