A pleasant Vauban-style town on the banks of the Meuse, some 25 kilometers from Orval Abbey, Stenay became a royal city in the 7th century. It became one of the valley's most powerful Merovingian strongholds, then changed course in the 12th century with the construction of a large square lined with shopping arcades, which were the setting for a number of renowned fairs. In the 17th century, Stenay was once again transformed into a modern military citadel. Its most illustrious monument from this period is the citadel's food store, inside which you'll find an unmissable curiosity: the Beer Museum.
