The famous site of the meeting between Marshal Pétain and Hitler on October 24, 1940 has long, and unfairly, paid the price for this historic event, which was to commit France to a sinister collaborationist policy. Montoire is a charming little town of stone and half-timbered houses. It's a village nestled at the foot of the remains of a medieval castle, which once resisted Richard the Lionheart's assault but was taken by Henry IV's troops. Throughout the year, Montoire lives to the rhythm of cultural events, including its folklore festival in August and its Musikenfête museum, dedicated to musical instruments.
