Gateway to the Perche Sarthois, one of the Petites Cités de Caractère, it is a charming little town with a rich heritage, peaceful and warm, with historic buildings on either side of the Anille, lined with gloriettes. This town owes its origin to a monastery founded at the beginning of the 6th century by a hermit from Auvergne, Karileph. This monastery will become one of the most important in Maine. In the 19th century, the town developed and became a sub-prefecture. Numerous facilities and buildings that were then commissioned make its charm today: the quays of the Anille, the court, the grain market, the museum-theater-library, etc.. Saint-Calais, which also stands out as the capital of the "chausson aux pommes" (apple turnover), is served by public transport with the No. 215 line - Bessé-sur-Braye/Le Mans - of the Aléop network. Beautiful local markets on Thursday and Sunday mornings.
