Its name would come from Calvus mons (Bald Mountain), at the time inhabited by Carnutes. During the Roman domination, it was an oppidum surrounded by ditches and wooden fortifications. Their layout is still visible today. A remnant of the moat is still in water to the north west of the village. Today, Chaumont-sur-Tharonne is a charming, well-preserved Sologne village. You will notice an abundance of typical houses with half-timbering and brickwork. In the absence of a stone quarry, most of the communes had their own brickworks. A flea market is held on the third Sunday of September.
