The force of history is immediately felt in Cléry-Saint-André. The imposing basilica, in flamboyant Gothic style, dominates the village, marked by the pilgrimages that began in the Middle Ages and continue to this day. Joan of Arc passed through here, but the building had just been razed to the ground by the English, whom she would soon drive out of Orleans. It was one of her comrades in arms, Dunois, who had the project to rebuild it, but it was of course Louis XI who was the master builder. Under his reign, the basilica became a royal chapel and he erected his tomb, which was destroyed during the Wars of Religion and the Revolution.
