Thiron-Gardais owes its fame to its abbey founded in 1114 by Saint Bernard of Ponthieu. The Order of Thiron had an influence on about twenty abbeys and a hundred priories in the Perche, in the north of France and as far as Scotland, Ireland and Great Britain. His monks were so famous that they appear in the famous Roman de Renart. The opening of a classical college brought the abbey out of a certain decline in the 17th century. Louis XVI made it one of the ten royal military colleges in France, so much so that Napoleon Bonaparte was admitted as a pupil, although he never went there, his father having preferred Brienne for reasons of convenience.
