COOP 5 TERRE

Supermarket and minimarket
3/5
1 review

Beware of appearances, Manarola's small convenience store sells delicious focaccia, as well as excellent regional products. At the back of the store, don't hesitate to ask for some slices of raw or white ham, or pieces of local cheese to stuff your sandwich before attacking the hiking trails! Of course the prices are quite high, but the small shop has the monopoly in Manarola! It's a pity, however, that despite the success and the tourists, the friendliness of the owner is not always there.

This friendly bakery near the port offers a wide range of sweet and savoury treats to take away, starting with focaccia secca, but also gourmet pastries, from pandolce alla Genovese to camogliesi al rhum. This Camogli specialty resembles a large chocolate boulder, dusted with powdered sugar and filled with a rum-based cream. For a quick lunch on the beach or out for a stroll, enjoy creamy focaccia, plain, with cheese or onions, thin slices of pizza, savory vegetable pies and many other delights.

FRATELLI CARLI

Olive oil producer
3/5
1 review

Another of Italy's great olive-growing families is the Carli brothers. This emporium is entirely dedicated to the sale of their olive oil and its derivatives: pesto, tinned sardines, tapenade, olive and artichoke pâté, as well as traditional cakes and cosmetics, all in the Ligurian gastronomic tradition. A small counter allows you to attend themed lunches on reservation (see the agenda on the Facebook account, don't hesitate to contact them to find out about all the events planned, which vary according to the season).

MANGINI

Patisserie

Favourite pastry of the Genoese bourgeois, Mangini maintains the same refined atmosphere (admire the chandeliers rocks) and same quality in its dishes since 1876. The small daisies filled with jam are exquisite. Without forgetting the main house speciality and made in Liguria: Sacripantina. Created in 1851 by Giovanni Preti, this cake with basic ingredients classic (milk, butter, egg yolks, flour) is nicely enhanced with rum and Marsala, without forgetting the addition of bread from Spain.

CREMERIA BUONAFEDE

Glacier

This little store, which would almost go unnoticed along Via Luccoli, is a piece of history. A landmark for gourmets, its red neon sign reads Caffetteria, which would look right at home in a Cinecittà film... As you'll have gathered, this is a far cry from supermarkets. The cremeria sells frothy artisanal ice creams, cream-filled wafers, Liège coffees and chocolates, and Genovese specialties such as panera genovese, a kind of iced coffee mousse. Top flavors include sabayon and pistachio.

For a change from traditional ice cream, here's something to refresh your summer snacks. This all-purpose café-bistro prepares rich Sicilian specialties, including granite, a glass filled with crushed ice in a variety of flavors. Almost every ice-cream parlour sells them, but Don Paolo's are the best in the region. PASTICCERIA SVIZZERA

Patisserie

In the palace where Lord Byron stayed, this patisserie, named after its Swiss founder, is a landmark. Sweet and savoury mignardises and all kinds of chocolates have been made here with the utmost care since 1910. The store, which has caught up with the trend for a certain clientele eager for a more balanced diet, also offers lower-calorie "sweets", with less sugar and more fresh fruit or nuts (walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds). One of the specialties that will last the trip is Genoese pandolce.

Just a stone's throw from the Carlo Felice Theatre, one of Genoa's finest focaccias, in a central location where good bakeries are rare. Ideal for a quick breakfast or lunch, sitting around the piazza de Ferrari watching the fountain sparkle, before heading off to via Garibaldi and its many palaces.

ANTICA GELATERIA GUARINO

Glacier €€

Castelletto's most famous ice cream parlour, which has been making the finest semifreddi and panere (creamy ice cream parfaits) for generations. With such a solid reputation, we only regret that he took the opportunity to double his prices... A pity, but the gelato is still exquisite, and if you happen to push into this beautiful residential area, the terrace with its plunging view over the city is well worth a stop. There's also a cafeteria service, serving breakfasts and aperitifs.

A gourmet bakery renowned for serving the best focaccia in Genoa. The area is quiet, not very touristy, close to the Museo Sant'Agostino, and it's mostly local residents who help themselves here for their "daily bread". The shop windows are mouth-watering: the focaccia boards are hot out of the oven, and their fragrance wafts to the end of the street.
