Surrounding the entire city, they were intended to protect it from both land and sea attacks. They were partially destroyed at the beginning of the century. The famous Puertas de Tierra are still visible: these towers were built between 1639 and the mid-18th century. Vauban, who created the defensive system of Cádiz, reinforced it with several forts and bastions, some of which can still be seen (the castles of San Sebastián and Santa Catalina, the latter of which can be visited). Even today, parks and gardens enhance the stroll along the seafront with the Parque del Genovés or the Alameda Apodaca.

CASTELL DE ROCABRUNA (CASTLE OF ROCABRUNA)

Fortifications and ramparts to visit

Sitting on the top of a hill, it is one of the oldest (the first mention of the castle dates back to 1070) and the most imposing fortifications of the comarca of the Ripollès. If there are still ruins, it remains quite easy to guess the organization of the old construction: The central nave and chapel are the most easily identifiable and two defensive towers. The only panorama on the valley from the castle is worth a walk.

THE FORTRESS OF VELEZ-MÁLAGA

Fortifications and ramparts to visit

It is on the highest point in the city, about 80 meters above sea level, that was built this fortress in the th century. But it was between the th and th centuries that it reached its peak by becoming one of the most important fortresses of the kingdom of Nasrid in Granada. Today, you can only see the parts of its old wall and its dungeon, torre del en, rebuilt in the 70 s. In spite of this, there is a beautiful view of the city, but also the plain of Vélez.
