THE WALL
A section of wall, a vestige to observe along the Carrer de la Muralla
Banyoles was a fortified town, protected by its walls, from the beginning of the 13th century until the end of the 15th century. During this period, the town gates were closed at nightfall, only to be reopened at the time of morning prayers. Damaged during the Catalan Civil War (1462-1472), restoration work began in the 16th century, but continued until the 18th century, by which time the wall had lost its defensive strength. The only remnant that can be seen today is along Carrer de la Muralla, between Carrer de la Porta del Forn and Carrer de la Pia Almoina. Constructed from travertine tiles, the local stone, this section of wall features a doorway surmounted by a large semicircular arcade, a dozen loopholes and two Gothic-inspired hexagonal gloriettes topped by seven-pinacled cupolas. The latter architectural elements date from the 16th or 17th century.
