COURTYARD CASTLE

Castles to visit

Originally, the castle depended on the county of Chartres. One can think that it was rebuilt in the years 1530-1550 instead of a medieval fortress, for Jacques d'Avaugour. Thereafter, the Montmorency were the owners. Courtalain was transmitted by inheritance in 1862 to the Gontaut-Biron family who is still the owner. In this exceptional setting, a beautiful 29 th-century orangerie welcomes a conference and meeting area as well as a hotel with rooms. Single, double, triple or quadruple rooms, from 88 € per night for a double room. The atmosphere is authentic and friendly. A suite in the castle for 190 € at night. 8 € breakfast per person. Houses furnished with 3 rooms for five people, kitchen corner for 160 € on weekends. Swimming pool, large park, ping-pong, mini-golf, fishing for activities.

THE CASTLE AND THE CHURCH

Castles to visit

Only a moat separates the castle of the Saint-Lubin church. The buildings and the park that stretches behind were built between the th and th centuries. Following an unusual architecture in the region, the church presents a series of stained glass windows telling the story of Saint Lubin, the former bishop of Chartres. By entering the gardens of the castle, the surprise continues with canals, where Coule flows, separating the grassland from the building. Bridges regularly allow crossing the river. The chapel Saint-Nicolas of the castle and the church Notre-Dame were covered with frescoes under the impetus of Florimond Robertet, Treasurer of France and Secretary of Finance under François I, when he bought the castle in 1505 and began to restore it. THE CONGY BRIDGE

Ancient monuments

It is located on an old track that linked Bourges to Nevers. A long time ago he was considered a Gallo-Roman bridge, but recently Jean Mesqui (Engineer and Pavement Engineer) said: «The local archives tell us that such small books, prey of inclement weather and floods, were constantly reconstructed… A refurbishment of the Congy Bridge took place in 1608.» At that time, the administration of the Bridges and Pavements, at the head of which Sully found himself (the strong man of the region), had demolished the old parapets of the bridge and substituted the stone stones; The contractor was a certain Nicolas Gauthier, and the case cost 630 pounds. '. It is not better to say and even though today this bridge jamming Vauvise leads nowhere, it does not prevent it from recently restored…

THE GALLO-ROMAN AMPHITHEATRE

Ancient monuments

Gennes was an important Gallo-Roman city because of its privileged position on the Loire and trade routes. There are still many remains of this period, more or less well preserved, of which the most remarkable is the amphitheatre of Mazerolles. Considered the largest Gallo-Roman amphitheatre in the west, it could accommodate up to 5,000 spectators. Its construction is original: on the hillside, the cellars of the arena were dug; only the podium and the surrounding wall were built. During the Empire, the theatre organised the circus games, which saw gladiators and animals confront each other, but also naumachia (water fights) thanks to a machinery that allowed to flood the arena. One of its main characteristics is its perfectly preserved terracotta drainage pavement. This amphitheatre and other remains discovered - baths, temples, aqueduct, habitat - were part of a vast Gallo-Roman complex built at the end of the 1st century AD and used until the beginning of the 3rd century. Finally, an area of habitat has recently been revealed during an archaeological diagnosis that completes the observations already established. For the time being, the researchers hypothesize that Gennes would have been a large sanctuary in a rural area and a place of conciliation before the conquest of Gaul. Guided tours and animations help to make these ruins full of history talk!
