THE BURG

Thanks to a leaflet handed out by the Tourist Office you can walk along the narrow streets of the old town. At the entrance of the main street a museum relates the history of the city to that of the Viscount of Turenne allowing you to discover the secrets and wonders of this pretty market town. Rue du Commandant Charollais, the Courrèze house, the seat of the Viscount States in the 17th century, the Hall place (destroyed in 1952), the Vachon house with dovecote and decorated bays (formerly the house of the consuls of Turenne in the 16th and 17th centuries), the hotel Carbonnières of Louis XIII style with turret and watchtower… or even the Chapitre house, in rue Joseph Rouveyrol, remarkable for its flamboyant Gothic style door with pinnacles. Towards the hill, the Calvaire tower recalls the 3rd enclosure. The fortified gate leads to the 2nd house of the Sénéschal and the chapel of the Capucins (1643), hosting exhibitions. From the esplanade surrounding the limestone cliffs, you enjoy a superb view that you can take the time to admire, sitting on a bench.

THE MEDIEVAL VILLAGE

Street square and neighborhood to visit
4.5/5

You are here in one of the most beautiful villages in France, organized around a Benedictine monastery. Don't sulk your pleasure in strolling through its old streets and alleys where you will discover the seigneurial residences of the Dukes of Noailles, Verneuil and the Cars family, the castles and fortified houses built in blond limestone and covered with flat Perigordian tiles and Corrèze slates, mullioned windows, old walls decorated with succulent and flowering plants, and lovely gardens. Don't hesitate to go around the church to admire its chevet, its sculpted capitals, the lantern of the dead and the defensive square tower and to go to the end of the terrace: you will be rewarded by the vast view of the Yssandonnais and the Brive basin which is ideal for daydreaming. On the square there is a mission cross bearing all the instruments of the Passion of Christ. Go down below the village to the good fountain of Saint-Maurice, which according to the legend gives back beauty and vitality.

4/5
3 reviews

A trademark of the living heritage company, this family distillery was founded in 1839. During the visit, this predestined family of liquoristes will share your love of the profession. You will see the old infant, the copper cauldrons and the oak wrath of the Limousin that mysteriously buff liqueurs in silence. You will feel the spirits of plants and seeds, macerated of bark and fruit. You will taste genuine regional specialities in a fragrant atmosphere: " Supreme Denoix "," Quinquinoix "… You will discover the purple mustard of Brive restored by the house. Their artisan and traditional know-how guarantees the quality of their liqueurs and aperitifs based on nuts and other fruits, without colouring and without added aroma. By developing their recipes as in the th century the family preserves a heritage, know-how, quality and true taste of nature.

THE ROMANESQUE CHURCH

Churches cathedrals basilicas and chapels
4/5
1 review

A jewel of Romanesque art, this church was part of a vast priory attached to the Abbey of the "Chair God", founded by Robert de Turlande. The Benedictine monks contributed to its construction in 1122, imposing building on the edge of this vast plateau dominating the country. Despite the violence of the wars of Religion and the Sling, which only saves the choir in the ambulatory and the transept, it retains its nobility and greatness. In the interior, the ambulatory of the pilgrimage churches surrounds the enhanced chorus. Notice the sculpted capitals: the one located near the entrance to a juggler (frequent companion of pilgrims on the route of Compostelle) and the expression of the face of the very beautiful Christ, a pure gem of Spanish origin, which seems to follow you and, in turn, to speak, look and communicate his suffering and tenderness; view of the right, his eyes evoke the serenity of death seems to follow you. In summer, the church hosts classical music concerts at the "Festival de Saint Robert" and guided tours are organised.

THE CHURCH OF ST. MARTIN

Churches cathedrals basilicas and chapels

Nestled between the th and th centuries environments, this Romanesque-style church originally consisted of a choir, a transept and a nave with three spans. It was enlarged from bas to the early th century. The chevet, with Cistercian inspiration, is the oldest part. Struck by lightning in 1841, his bell was rebuilt by Viollet-le-Duc. Inside, take the time to observe the floral motifs carved on the columns of columns that overcome the spans, beautiful woodwork, 1864 th century stalls, pietà wooden pietà of the 1874 th century or the organ of Cavaillé-Coll, realized between and in the neo-Renaissance style. In the th century, François Bosroussel, a master doctor in Ussel, ordered the foil of the quartermaster, the tabernacle and the altarpiece (the latter is not present anymore).

THE CHAPEL OF THE PENITENTS

Churches cathedrals basilicas and chapels

This chapel was built in the th century, at a time when the cemetery of the St. Martin Church was transferred to the city hospital. It underwent a change in the th century when the brotherhood of blue Krajina (whose spirituality is inspired by the Franciscan ideal) settled there. A pole of religious arts at the Musée du Pays d'Ussel, it contains beautiful collections of art and religious ethnography. It contains a magnificent golden altarpiece, works by Paul Delimosin (1711), a Pentecôte Frères (1664), a socket in champlevé enamel from the early th century as well as polychrome wooden statues.

OUR LADY OF THE GOSPEL CHAPEL

Churches cathedrals basilicas and chapels

Located at the top of Pasteur Street, La Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-la-Chabanne is a rural chapel, which benefits from calm and a green setting away from the city. His view dominates the town of Ussel. Built in the mid th century as a chamber, it is characterized by its large and massive walls surmounted by a large slate roof. His bell was the subject of three restorations: one in 1750, the other in the aftermath of the Second World War and the last in 1993. This religious building has a glazed dome painted in 169, the realization of which would be attributed to Jean Jaloustre, a painter from the nearby small town of Meymac (according to the Ussel tourist office). The ancient statue of the Virgin was destroyed in 1793. The stone sculpture of the Virgin to the Child, whose base is adorned with two bumble and Coquilles shells, dates back to the th century. The statue, now visible above the door, is a copy; The original was deposited at the Doubs Chapel (at the bottom of Pasteur Street).
