LAVA FLOW

Natural site to discover

To view the lava flow, or sink lava, you must park and walk the marked trail on foot. We walk on a stretch of hardening lava, quite impressive. At the end, on the right, there is a huge cloud of smoke caused by the flow of lava from puuoo into the ocean. Most of the time you can see only the cloud and no lava. You must come before sunrise or at night to distinguish color from lava. In any case, and even if it's very tempting, you should never walk away from marked trails! The soil is unstable and boiling: it was fatal to many curious imprudent. Finally, before leaving, it is recommended to call the park standard to know exactly where the lava sink is: volcano is active and changes in trajectory occur daily. It's a question of luck, actually… if ever, when you stay on Big Island, you hear that the casting is particularly easy to observe, because we know that generally enough, you have to go to the park soon because it may not last.

FRUIT PARK - 12 TREES PROJECT

A visit to do for fruit and plant lovers. Ken Love, one of the archipelago's largest arborists, founded this educational garden on Hawaii's fruit trees more than 10 years ago. At the beginning, only 12 trees were planted, which is why the park is also called "12 Trees Project". Today, there are about sixty of them. Ken is trying to reintroduce endemic fruits from Hawaii. He reintroduced a local banana species, called "lahilahi", which had completely disappeared from the region and has been developing smoothly in the park for several years. It is forbidden to pick fruit, but if you want to participate in a tasting session, call Ken and arrange an appointment. He will be happy to make you taste the specialities of his garden! Some fruits are really amazing, such as Rollinia Deliciosa with its crème brûlée taste!
