This beach has the very characteristic shape of the ancient volcanic cone, fed by the ancient eruptions of Mauna Loa

The sand of Papakolea Sand Beach has a rare color: it is green! The color is due to olivine, a green mineral from volcanic rocks. The beach has the very characteristic shape of the ancient volcanic cone, fed by the ancient eruptions of Mauna Loa. But, be careful, to contemplate this little wonder, a little walk is necessary.

Warning: the Hawai'i Island Tourism Office would have liked us to stop mentioning this beach in the guidebook because many tourists have soiled this precious beach. You will not find it in any official brochure of the island... We leave it in the guide because it would be a pity that you miss it but, in exchange, take care to respect it!

Tips to get there

To get to the beach, you have to take a path that is very bumpy and forbidden to rental cars. Even with a jeep it is difficult and you need a permit! So the easiest way is either to go on foot (about 1 hour walk because it takes about 3 km one way with a bottle of water) or to call the locals who offer to shuttle you with their personal jeeps. Many locals do indeed provide this service in old jeeps that have already seen everything, and without necessarily having the permit to drive on this road, and it is much better than walking! Do not leave anything of value inside your vehicle, and especially not your suitcases, the parking lot is very very isolated.

A faire absolument
