Like many communes in the Autunois Morvan, Saint-Prix first developed during the Gallo-Roman period. In the Middle Ages, Saint-Prix was called Thor after the family of Jean de Thor, treasurer of the Templar Order. He offered the relics of Saint-Prix to his home town. Later on, the town changed its name and stopped its wine-making activity because of the phylloxera, a devastating insect. Nowadays and for several years, the commune of Saint-Prix has multiplied its actions in favour of biodiversity and has been rewarded in this sense.Saint-Prix had the opportunity to welcome and host illustrious people including Jean-Jacques Rousseau who practiced botany at the Chateau de la Chasse and writers such as Edmond Rostand, Jules Huot de Goncourt, Victor Hugo who had made Saint-Prix his summer residence and composed some of his most famous poems.Nearby, the Haut-Folin massif is the highest point in Burgundy at 901 metres. It is a privileged site for hikers, nature lovers, but also for enjoying some ski slopes. The hikers will be able to discover the surroundings and the pond of Goulette by taking the GR13.
