Ulverstone is located at the mouth of the Leven River, on the Bass Highway, about 20 kilometers west of Devonport. The area was settled in 1848 when Andrew Risby and his family settled and developed farmland in the middle of a densely wooded wilderness. Ulverstone grew rapidly from its inception in 1861 and gradually established itself as an important economic center between the two major cities on the northwest coast, Burnie and Devonport. The namesake town of Ulverstone is in England and is also located on the estuary of a river called Leven.
