Situated 50 km north of Launceston, at the end of the Tamar Valley and at the mouth of the river of the same name, Georgetown is a small town of 4,000 inhabitants with major historical significance. It was here (actually at Low Head, 3 km north of the town center) that the first European settlers landed in November 1804: 4 English ships with 181 passengers (free settlers, convicts and soldiers). A visit to the maritime museum, lighthouse and beach at Low Head is a must. The Low Head Penguin Tour, organized daily at sunset (AU$ 40), is a great opportunity to see the penguins in a small group.
