Beauty Point lies 45 kilometers north of Launceston, on the south bank of the Tamar River. The site of this small town was originally created as a port to serve Beaconsfield and its gold mine. When the gold rush came to an end, Beauty Point became an important export center for the apples grown here. Established on Port Dalrymple (the mouth of the Tamar River), almost opposite George Town, Beauty Point lies at the heart of a region of livestock, crops and vineyards. Port facilities and fishing are still part of the economic life, and the Maritime College has a campus here.
