Scottsdale, formerly Ellesmere, is located on the Tasman Highway, approximately 60 kilometers northeast of Launceston and 22 kilometres southeast of the coastal town of Bridport. The area was described in 1855 as "the best soil on the island" by surveyor James Reid Scott, who named the town in 1893. A description that proved accurate and helped Scottsdale quickly become a major agricultural center. Potato farming, dairy farming, lumbering, poppy and lavender farming are the major industries in the area today. Bridestowe Estate Lavender Farm is one of the local attractions.
