The fourth largest city in Tasmania (population 19,000) and a major seaport, Burnie is located 47 kilometers from Devonport. It is here that logging and wood processing are the most visible. Founded in 1827 as Emu Bay, the town was named in the 1840s after William Burnie, who was a director of the Van Diemen's Land Company, the company responsible, with the help of convict labor, for developing the island. Burnie is home to the Cradle Coast Campus of the University of Tasmania. The town has little tourist interest, but is essential for buying supplies and fuel before heading out onto the island.
