Situated on the banks of the Isonzo River and at the foot of the Carso, the town is known worldwide for its Sacrario Militare, the largest ossuary of the First World War. The remains of more than 100,000 men are buried there. From the road, one is struck by the magnitude of this monument so imposing steps lined with cypresses. During the Great War, the area was the scene of terrible battles between the Italians and the Austrians, known as the "Twelve Battles of the Isonzo", because the front line was located along the river. These very deadly confrontations caused the death of 300,000 Italian soldiers and 200,000 Austro-Hungarians.
