Bordered by the river Isonzo, Gradisca is one of the most beautiful borghi of Italy. Its origins date back to a fortress built in the 15th century by the Venetians to face the Turkish threat, with the help of Leonardo da Vinci. In 1511, it passed into the hands of the Habsburgs and the city grew. The small center has a Mitteleuropa atmosphere, with some beautiful noble palaces and a square occupied by the theater and cafes. A path leads around the Venetian fortress. The town is home to the interesting Galleria Regionale di Arte Contemporanea Luigi Spazzacan. A pleasant stopover south of the Collio.
