Bibbona (3,100 inhabitants), although still relatively close to the tourist coast, is nevertheless a quiet, wine-growing village, pleasant to visit on foot. Once fortified, it is said to have been one of the best protected places in the Maremma. The historic centre is a labyrinth of streets and arches characteristic of the medieval period with some beautiful remains. The village is shrouded in the mystery of the Knights Templar, who are said to have left signs of their presence, such as the Arco di Bacco (Arch of Bacchus) dating from the 13th-16th century or symbols engraved on the stones of the church of Sant'Ilario (11th century).
