Contrary to what its name might suggest, the small town of Massa Marittima is perched in the heart of the gentle, metalliferous hills of the Maremma. In fact, its ancient Latin name, Massa Metallorum, evoked the metalliferous activity of yesteryear. Around the year 747, the transfer of the bishopric of Populonia, due to incessant pirate incursions, saw the town of Massa grow significantly. The heart of this beautiful town, Piazza Garibaldi, is surrounded by the spectacular Romanesque dome with its Pisan-style façade, the Romanesque travertine Palazzo Comunale and the Palazzo del Podestà, now home to the Archaeological Museum.
