The history of Follonica is closely linked to the Castello di Valli, of which some ruins remain (9th century), it served as a residence for the bishops of Lucca. The town also has an industrial past that dates back to the 19th century: following the reorganization of the foundry by the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, Follonica, which in 1835 had a population of about one hundred, saw the arrival of a large number of workers for the extraction of iron on the island of Elba. Many of them arrived in this hostile Maremma in search of a safe job. The ore extraction activities continued until 1962, when the smelters were finally closed
