Montescudaio is situated in the gentle hills of the Val di Cecina, about 50 km south-east of Livorno and 12 km from the coast. Like many villages in Italy, Montescudaio has had to struggle to keep its population growth stable. With 1,500 inhabitants in the 2000s, it was just reaching the size of the population it had in the mid-19th century. This town with its medieval character and quiet streets, which was originally a Benedictine monastery, can be a good stopover for a meal, or for discovering the booming wine of the Etruscan coast, on the road to Piombino.
