At 1,007 m above sea level, you are on the watershed of Madeira! You can see both sides of the island from this 'mouth' located equidistant between the São Vicente Valley to the north and Ribeira Brava to the south. In the heart of breathtaking nature, a myriad of hiking trails start from the Boca da Encumeada and its surroundings. For example, follow the Caminho do Norte (PR 21) to Ribeira Grande (approx. 3 km), a trail that is a bit difficult because of its steep gradient; or to the Folhadal (5.2 km), an easier path with abundant vegetation (bring a flashlight for the tunnel)
