2,240 inhabitants. The small village of Avinyó has been able to make a living from cereal and wine cultivation and the pig sector (the city is famous for its pig, the Ral d'Avinyó). It is spread around its pleasant Plaça Major, lined with arcades and dominated by its parish church, Sant Joan d'Avinyó, which preserves some elements of the Romanesque period. Several churches of Romanesque origin are to be visited in the surroundings of the village, such as the church of Santa Eugènia de Relat, dated from the 11th century and Santa Maria d'Horta, from the same period. In 1848, Avinyó was the scene of a memorable battle during which the Martiners fought the liberal army in the Second Carlist War. Every year in May, the inhabitants of the village celebrate this victory during the Fira dels Matiners, which is animated by poignant historical representations. To the south of the municipality flows one of the few natural salt springs of the Geopark, the Torrent Salat d'Avinyó. With a concentration of 23,000 mg of chlorides per litre, its waters are as salty as the sea! Halophilic organisms, which thrive in environments with high salt concentrations, proliferate in this watercourse of great geological and ecological value.
