Ernest Hemingway is said to have been inspired by the fishermen of Acciaroli for his book The Old Man and the Sea. The small port has a lot of charm, with its church dedicated to the Madonna dell'Annunziata, its fishermen's houses in rough stone and its watchtower. The village has attracted the attention of researchers because of the exceptional longevity of its inhabitants: there are, in fact, no less than 81 centenarians among its 700 inhabitants! The reasons for this longevity: the Mediterranean diet, an excellent genetic heritage, a measured activity: walking, gardening and fishing, a low pollution and low stress environment.
