Travel Guide Santa Maria

The island of Santa Maria is located in the northeast of the archipelago. It is the greenest and flattest of the northern group of islands of La Maddalena. There is the beautiful Cala Santa Maria, close to a small salt lake rich in birdlife. There are also a few houses, a lighthouse and even the remains of a convent where Benedictine friars from Bonifacio found refuge in the Middle Ages. The name of the island comes from a church, dedicated to the Virgin and attached to the convent, destroyed during the Turkish incursions. Finally, for the little anecdote, it is on this island that Roberto Begnini, the famous Italian actor, has a second home.
