Agropoli is a charming town on the Cilento coast, surrounded by hills. It has a beautiful historical center located on a rocky promontory overlooking the sea. It was inhabited since the Neolithic period and was located at the mouth of the Testene river. At that time there was a natural bay, now covered with sand. During the Roman period, a port called Ercula was developed. Later, the Byzantines fortified the promontory and named it Akropolis, which gave it its present name. Taken by the Saracens in 882, the city became Norman and was then dominated by various populations until 1806. Today it is one of the largest cities on the Cilento coast and an important seaside resort. The city is dominated by its historic center, which has preserved a large part of its medieval streets and its walls. To get there, take the wide Ennio Balbo Scaloni staircase up to the main entrance. At the top, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the city. You will find the 17th century church of Santa Costantinopoli (patron saint of fishermen) and the castle. Down from the city center is the lungomare and its beautiful beach to the scoglio San Francesco, a tiny islet planted with a cross where it is said that St. Francis of Assisi preached to the fish.
