Benifallet (about 700 inhabitants), a town in the Baix Ebre region, was first mentioned in historical documents in 1153. Nestled on the banks of the Ebro like a suspended village, Benifallet rises at the foot of the Serra de Cardó, where the old Carmelite convent and its seven hermitages were located. In the 19th century, the convent was transformed into a spa with medicinal waters that remained active for almost a century. The old Romanesque parish church erected in the 13th century in honor of the Virgin Mary, in the upper part of the town, is remarkable. Not to be missed is a visit to the Coves Meravelles (marvelous caves) with their multiple concretions carved into the mountain. With the Via Verda itinerary and the old Estació de Benifallet, now a country house, Benifallet is also a paradise for cycling enthusiasts. You can rent bicycles (electric ones for those who need a little help!) at the old train station and discover the historical route of the Zafán Valley railway. In addition, a cruise on the Ebro river of about 1 hour on board the llaüt de Benifallet is an opportunity to enjoy the beautiful views of the surrounding nature. To buy your ticket (possibility of combining the llaüt with a visit to the Marvelous Caves), go to the tourist office (Avinguda Lluís Companys, 3) and for more information, visit www.benifallet.altanet.org
