El Pinell de Brai is a small village in the county of La Terra Alta, surrounded by mountainous landscapes composed by the mountains of Cavalls and Pàndols. The hermitage of Santa Magdalena is located in the latter. The historic center of the village has a medieval appearance and preserves its steep streets and stone facades that rise up the hill. Its houses are coiled up on the cliffside and are popularly known as "hanging houses". In addition to its 18th-century church dedicated to Sant Llorenç, El Pinell de Brai is best known for its "wine cathedral", a cooperative winery and modernist work created in the early 20th century by Cèsar Martinell, a disciple of the famous Gaudí. It is one of the most important modernist buildings in the region (gourmets will not want to miss the excellent regional products in the restaurant of the cooperative, which offers tickets that combine a visit with tastings of excellent typical products of the region). On the weekend closest to August 10, El Pinell de Brai celebrates Sant Llorenç and the village comes alive with jotas, traditional dances. Also worth visiting in Pinelle de Brai is the interpretation center "Voices from the Front": a small museum that looks back at the influence of the press during the Civil War and the Battle of the Ebro, and the treatment of information across borders (www.batallaebre.org).
