Southwest of Elba, Pianosa is the lowest of the islands of the Tuscan archipelago, not exceeding 29 m above sea level. A penal colony until 1997, the island was used for agricultural activity thanks to the prisoners. Its crystalline seabed is inhabited by many species. In order to safeguard this ecological heritage, no tourist activity has been developed, it is impossible to sleep there. On the other hand, authorized boats organize excursions: a part of the island is free of access, the rest can be visited with a guide. To get there, the company Toremar leaves from Rio Marina and Piombino, Aquavision leaves from Marciana Marina.
