In the heart of the Apennines, 25 km south of Bologna, Marzabotto is famous for the remains of the Etruscan city Misa dating from the VI-Fifth centuries B.C. During the Second World War, the city was the scene of a massacre carried out by Nazi soldiers, supported by the Italian fascists, against the population of Marzabotto and the towns nearby. Between 29 September and 5 October 1944, almost 900 people were killed in retaliation.
