On the banks of the River Démer, Diest is a pleasant little Flemish town. In addition to a superb beguinage, it boasts solid fortified ramparts, four churches, a cloth market and some fine historic buildings. Like Bréda in the Netherlands or Orange in France, it was the fiefdom of the Orange-Nassau dynasty, to which Queen Beatrix belongs. The most famous was William the Silent (1553-1584), who led the secession of the United Provinces of the Netherlands against the Habsburgs of Spain. The name Diest also resonates in Belgian ears as the symbol of the delicious Gildenbier, a mild-tasting brown beer with a hint of caramel.
