HERBAL TRAYHerve, capital of the plateau named after him, has about 17,000 inhabitants and extends at the foot of a very characteristic leaning bell tower. The grassland region of the Plateau de Herve has a very heterogeneous geology. To the north, the soil is silty, sometimes stony, suitable for crops and grasslands with undulating relief. The landscape is wooded on the slopes and meadows are frequent. On the Plateau de Herve, silty soils alternate with sandy and clayey soils on an often chalky substrate. The terrain is very hilly and the altitude varies between 180 and 350 m. Prairies and forage occupy almost all of the cultivated land. The landscape owes its typical aspect to the lively hedges that surround the plots. The bocage of the Plateau or Pays de Herve and its high-stem orchards are dotted with small, typical farms, most of which were built in the 17th and 18th centuries. The region has an exceptional heritage of history, folklore and industry. All you have to do to realize this is to discover the Abbey of Val-Dieu, Clermont-sur-Berwine (one of the most beautiful villages in Wallonia), the American Cemetery of Henri-Chapelle in Homburg, the Moresnet viaduct, the historic centre of Herve, the village of Olne and the many castles. Traditions and folklore bring the magic of certain places such as the nail trees, to be seen in Olne, or the ancestral processions such as that of Herve, but also the gastronomic brotherhoods, the blessing of Saint-Hubert in Aubel, the nut fair in Henri-Chapelle, the famous carnivals or the fabulous Cavalcade in Herve. On foot, on horseback, on a classic bike or even on an electric bike, there are countless paths and paths, and nature lovers will never stop enjoying the various possibilities for walks offered by the region. Among the must-see attractions are Line 38 (from Liège to Hombourg), Montagne St Pierre (north of Visé), the Plombières mining site and the "Au Pays des Vergers" network, which will take cyclists throughout the Pays de Herve...Let's finish the tour d'horizon with the delicious local products of Herve and Aubel. The flavours of the region will have revealed almost all their secrets after visiting the Ferme de la Strée (an active dairy farm), the Musée du Terroir in Moresnet (local life and thematic exhibitions), the Moulin du Val-Dieu in Aubel (opposite the abbey) and the Boutiques de notre Enfance, always in Aubel. There is also the Vieux Moulin cheese dairy (the only producer of Herve cheese made from raw milk) in Herve-Battice, the Nyssen artisanal syrup shop in Aubel or the Grain d'Orge brewery in Hombourg. And why not take the opportunity to taste a fragrant Herve cheese or a beautiful goose plate with Instar de Visé, all drizzled with a good wine from the Domaine de Marnière vineyard in Warsage. Both connoisseurs and amateurs will be seduced!
