Tongeren, with Tournai and Arlon, is one of the oldest cities in Belgium. The city has therefore preserved many vestiges of its Gallo-Roman and other past. Today, it is a rather quiet little town of 30,000 inhabitants, which has escaped the ravages of the 20th century. Situated almost equidistant from the two cities, it attracts many inhabitants of Hasselt and Liege who come to stroll around on weekends. It is a good place to walk through the streets, to have a drink on the terrace of one of the cafés of the Grand-Place with a view on the basilica, or to stroll on the antiques market on Sunday morning.
